Technology has developed and with it cinema and films. Cinema innovations have come over the years in ways that are not only astounding but also completely breathtaking. The entire world has been taken by storm time and time again with some awesome innovations in cinema that have brought to life the impossible. In this article, we shall explore some of the best innovations in cinema that has set the pace and trend in grand style over the decades. 10. The Wizard of Oz (1939)

This is one of the biggest adapted films ever to hit the big screen and the reason is because of its immense contribution to cinema. The Wizard of Oz is one of the first films to show color on screen. The film showed Oz being brought to magical life in Technicolour.

This popularly regarded as the first film to use Computer Generated Imagery (CGI).The film, shot and released in 1973 was of the sci-fi genre, and brought about made common a technology that is today regarded as one of the best innovations in cinema. This is because you will be hard pressed to find a movie from up to three decades ago till date that does not use CGI in production.

One of the rather interesting cinema innovations that has actually influenced films over the years is the use of a filming technique called “found footage”. Found footage films are films where characters within find an amateur shot footage which sets the basis for the entire movie. Films like The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield were all big hits that followed after or made use of the found footage technique.

The water innovation film would be an apt title for this one. Previously, rendering large bodies of water to look realistic in films was quite difficult to achieve. The 1997 James Cameron move Titanic actually was a one of its kind film in the way the water was rendered. However, the animation that achieved such a cinematic feat took over 6 months to render. The Perfect Storm changed all that with the Industrial Light and Magic technology which has forever made water rendering easy to achieve in films.

Not only just a blockbuster, this film takes credit for bringing one of the most
important inventions and innovations  to cinema. The Matrix Reloaded was the very first movie to use the technology of Facial motion capture one of the cinema innovations that would go on to feature in a great deal of movies right from its introduction.

5. The Polar Express (2004)

Ever seen King Kong or the Hobbit, Avengers and so on and wondered how the many varied characters are created to look different yet perfectly natural, or how Bruce Banner and Hulk look alike (Avengers). Well it all comes from one of the best innovations in cinema introduced in The Polar Express of 2004. The idea was to ask actors to wear skintight outfits and record their 3D position and motion sequence with cameras and sensors. It’s all techy and great stuff as you’ve probably seen from the films.

4. The Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)

This was the first movie to use a completely digital background all through the movie. In fact the entire movie with all the scenes seemingly shot in cities and so on was actually done in some sort of basement. This innovation opened the way for films like 300, the Hobbit which all feature great scenery all rendered digitally.

3. Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006)

Ever wondered how Davy Jones and the crew of the Flying Dutchman were so realistically rendered on screen. This feat of cinematic magic was achieved using the technology called Image Motion Capture or IMoCap as it is more commonly called in the cinematic circles, again this innovation was achieved with some bodysuits, sensors and extra cameras and voila! Magic is created.

2. Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-03)

So many soldiers fought in the wars of the ring but the cast list was much less, guess why! It is because of awesome innovations called ‘Massive’ first used to great effect by Peter Jackson in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Before the films it was just about impossible to create a realistic battle scene (or any scene for that matter) of hundreds of thousands of people that were not really there or Computer Generated. The software Massive solved all that, which is what made films like 300 possible.
