10. The Vulcan, USA

The Vulcan, as its named, falls under our Top 10 super computers for you because it is one powerful mother.

This granddaddy runs off of IBM’s BlueGene and Q Platforms and surprisingly for an older system kicks out 4.3 petaflops from its 400,000 cores. Via LLNL’s High-Performance Computing Innovation Center partners make use of Vulcan in order to produce data of a economic nature, mostly to ascertain the competitiveness thereof.

Also running off the Cray XC30 system, the Piz Daint in Lugano, Switzerland, is housed at the Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS). 6. The Mira, USA

Another IBM BlueGene Platform driven super computer, the Mira, not only makes our top 10 super computers but also is one of the oldest on our index.

Homed just outside of Chicago, USA in the Argonne National Laboratory, this larger than life computer is utilized by the United States Department of Energy.

With a monumental peak of 8,59 petaflops and using 786,432 cores, the grandpa of super computers still impresses and outperforms most of the others.

5. The Stampede, USA

The Stampede works off a Dell PowerEdge C8220 platform, which is generally used on desktop computers, so that in itself tells us how special this guy is. The Texas Advanced Computer Center is home to the Stampede and for the advancement of computing infrastructure, NSF ranks this super computer high in their portfolio.

When it comes to the research around engineering, science, global changes and challenges, as well as anything of a data-sensitive nature, the Stampede makes good work of it.

Its petaflop rate is nearly 10 so has full right to be on our super computers list.

4. The K Computer, Japan

The Titan has a rightful place on our Top 10 super computers for you list and here are the reasons why. This mother of all works with all components related to chemistry simulations, fuel combustion, meterology and science study.

Following its upgrade in 2012, the Titan ranked on the top of the list for a little while, that was until the Tianhe-2 from China pipped it.

Based at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States Department of Energy, the Titan works off of the Cray XK7 system and kicks out 17.59 petaflops and utilizes 261,632 NVIDIA K20x cores.

Hitting our number one of our Top 10 super computers for you, the Tianhe-2 stands head and shoulders above the rest. Although also on the Cray XK7 system, as is the Titan, this super guy pips the number 2 by a few petaflops, peaking at 33.86 and using cores of 3,120,000.

Based in China at the Chinese National Universtiy of Defense Technology, she is used by the Chinese Government for all and sundry. More than just impressive, we are in awe!
