According to the definition of The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), a serial killer is a person who commits “a series of murders, committed as separate events, by one offender acting alone”. The motivation for such crimes can be various, ranging from sexual impulse or financial gain to attention seeking. Usually, the victims have some common signs as age, gender, physical appearance, race, etc. In the following list, you will find some real serial killer stories. 10. Ted Bundy

The story of Ted Bundy is one of the most famous serial killer stories. He kidnapped, raped and decapitated numerous young women during the 1970s. He killed at least twelve women and he kept their heads as a decoration in his apartment. He is famous also because of his two successful escapes from police and courthouse. Ted Bundy was sentenced to death and executed in 1989.
9. John Wayne Gacy

Between 1972 and 1978, John Gacy murdered 33 men and boys. He promised them work or money and lured them into his apartment where he killed them by strangulation. At first, he buried bodies of his victims under his house and later he threw them into the river. He committed all of his crimes in the Chicago area. John Gacy was executed in 1994.
8. Andrei Chikatilo

Andrei Chikatilo, nicknamed The Butcher of Rostov, was a Soviet serial killer who killed no less than 52 women. Chikatilo committed the murders between 1978 and 1990. When he was trialed at the court, relatives of victims demanded his release so they could kill him themselves. The Butcher of Rostov was executed by a firing squad in 1994. His story is one of the most disturbing serial killer stories in the eastern bloc.
7. Gary Ridgway

Gary Ridgeway was investigated and arrested for four murders in 2001. During the interrogation, he confessed that he killed more than 70 women in 1990s and 1980s. Because he cooperated with the police and led the detectives to the dumping sites of the bodies, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. He is sometimes referred to as “The Green River Killer” as he dumped at least five bodies in this river. Definitely one of the most disturbing serial killer stories.
6. Pedro Rodrigues Filho

Pedro Rodrigues Filho was born in 1954 in Brazil and committed his first murder at the age of 14. He was arrested in 1973 but he continued to kill people even in prison where he killed at least 47 people including his own father. He was released in 2007 after serving 34 years behind bars but Filho was re-arrested in 2011. This is definitely one of the scariest and most disturbing serial killer stories.
5. Daniel Camargo Barbosa

Daniel Barbosa raped and killed dozens of women in Colombia. He was arrested then but managed to escape and continued with killings in Ecuador where he killed 72 women. Overall, he took the lives of 150 victims. Barbosa was convicted in 1989 and in 1994, he was killed by the cousin of one of the victims.
4. Harold Fredrick Shipman

Dr. Harold “Fred” Shipman was a well-known and respected doctor in Britain who used to inject a lethal dose of the diamorphine. Then he forged wills of his victims and collected a lot of money in this way. He used this approach on more than 250 old people. Shipman hanged himself in his cell at a prison in 2004.
3. Pedro Alonso Lopez

Nicknamed “The Monster of the Andes”, he raped and killed more than 300 girls across whole South America. Many of his victims were buried in one mass grave. Lopez served 18 years in Ecuadorian prison and now he is serving the life in prison in his country of origin, Colombia. Because of the number of victims, this is one of the worst serial killer stories.
2. Tommy Lynn Sells

In the another of American real serial killer stories, Sells committed several brutal murders in Texas between 1985 and 1999. Among others, he killed a 13-year-old girl. When he stabbed one 10 years old girl and left her for dead, he didn´t notice that she in fact survived. Her description of Sells led to his capture in 1999. Tommy Lynn Sells was executed in 2014.

When doing a list of the most disturbing serial killer stories, it is almost impossible to have the top spot different from the Jack the Ripper. This iconic serial killer murdered several prostitutes of the East London slums in from 1888 probably to 1891. His identity is still unknown but he became the part of popular culture and his murders were an inspiration for many books or movies as well as for other killers.
